Company Background:
Gilt Groupe provides access, by invitation only, to Men`s, Women`s, Children`s, Beauty, and Home coveted fashion and luxury brands at prices up to 70% off retail. Each sale lasts 36 hours and features hand selected styles from a single designer. The business model, based on urgency and scarcity, offers extraordinary goods at incredible prices, but only for a limited time. All of these sales occur daily at noon, driven by daily email reminders and alerts to a private membership. Most of the hot items are sold within the first 10 minutes, with the bulk of sales occurring within the first 90 minutes.

The mania that ensues is similar to what we’ve seen at Black Friday rush at Walmart, the purchase of a new iPhone at an Apple Store, or the mad dash at sample sales like Filene’s Basement and Kleinfeld’s wedding gowns in New York City.
The business causes a daily, massive flood of transactional traffic at noon. Hundreds of thousands of shoppers compete online for the limited inventory, creating the need for a highly scalable and reliable web infrastructure. Our peak traffic is approaching the average load of large ecommerce sites like Amazon.com. The technology team must build an infrastructure that can scale to this capacity near noon, sustain the tremendous load for a few hours, then go away. Gilt Groupe requires the techniques of cloud computing and virtualization.
Key Responsibilities:
As a Senior Software Engineer for Gilt Groupe, you`ll join an elite development team and take digital merchandising to the next level. Your work here involves not just our website, but all the key back-end business functions that run our business, including purchasing, receiving, inventory management, shipping and customer intelligence. In our rapid software development lifecycle environment, you`ll see the meaningful results of your work quickly, sometimes within weeks. And we offer an honest and open environment, highly receptive to your ideas, highlighted by weekly tech team offsite hackfests. Our company is currently one of the fastest growing companies in NYC and we’re looking for a few very talented, highly qualified developers to help us stay ahead of the growth.
As a Senior Software Engineer in New York`s Chelsea district, one of your first missions will be learning Ruby to supplement your solid background in object-oriented development. You`re likely to thrive in this role with 5 years C/C++ coding in environments where the performance implications of applications you designed, architected and built were paramount. Ideally, you then took those skills into website development, learned J2EE, Python or PHP, and perhaps Rails, and worked on high performance, highly scalable websites.
Here are a few of the meaningful projects currently on our docket:
Redesigning the back-end UI for a better user experience. Keep in mind that the public Gilt Groupe website is only a small portion of the overall technology used in our business. You`ll also get a chance to design a new admin website, and create a portal into our business processes, work that will involve a bit of architecture as well as the UI. You`ll be automating business processes across the enterprise, from purchasing to receiving to inventory control and shipping. We`ll look to your insights in how we can automate complex business processes, and how we can better organize data. Your ability to understand and design key workflows so you can contribute to the overall network architecture and database design, will be key.
Designing, architecting and building our reporting infrastructure. You`ll approach this design heavy function almost as a data warehouse project. You`ll help our organization ID those members of Gilt who are our most valuable, to forecast future customer behavior and help us to better estimate what types of merchandise, and how much of it, to purchase.
